Cross stitch from zero: reading charts, counting aida and keeping it neat
Everything a first-timer needs to start a counted cross stitch and finish with a tidy, even piece.
Cross stitch is pixel art with thread. If you can count to ten and follow a grid, you can do it.
Fabric count
Aida comes in counts: 14-count has 14 squares per inch and is the standard for beginners. Higher count means smaller stitches. Use 2 strands of floss on 14-count.
Finding the centre
Fold the fabric in quarters and mark the centre with a pin. Charts mark the centre with arrows. Start there so the design ends up where you expect.
Reading the chart
Each square on the chart is one stitch. Symbols correspond to colours in the key. Highlight rows as you finish them.
The stitch
Work a row of half stitches /// from left to right, then come back \\\ to complete the crosses. Every top stitch in the whole piece should slant the same way; that's the secret to a smooth, even look.
Starting and stopping
No knots. Use a loop start: fold one strand in half, thread the two cut ends, and catch the loop on the back with your first stitch. Finish by running the needle under four or five stitches on the back.
Backstitch and tidy
Outline details in backstitch with one strand after all crosses are done. Wash gently in cool water, press face down on a towel, and frame or hoop.

- A bookmark on 14-count band.
- A small sampler with your initials and the year.
